Our Story
Reading Allowed was founded in 2019 by Angela Marks who passionately believes that reading is a social justice issue. There are numerous sobering articles and much research that describe the long-term effects of illiteracy in our society.
Angela knew that high-quality, individualized instruction benefits struggling readers. Since this type of specialized instruction can be financially prohibitive, she founded Reading Allowed which provides tutoring on a sliding fee scale based on household income.
Angela holds a Master’s Degree in Education and is a Pennsylvania-Certified Reading Specialist. She is also a Wilson Reading System® Dyslexia Practitioner and a Structured Literacy/Dyslexia Interventionist accredited by the International Dyslexia Association. She serves as the co-chair for Readby4th’s Reading Support Working Group.
Reading Allowed currently serves more than 100 students who are supported by 30 credentialed, structured literacy tutors. They are certified and experienced in structured literacy based programs and are committed to remaining at the forefront of the science of reading research as well as the academic and emotional wellbeing of the students they serve. Our goal is to help all struggling readers who seek our support.
Reading Allowed believes that every struggling reader deserves the highest quality structured literacy instruction regardless of financial circumstances. Instruction is delivered by caring and compassionate tutors who have been rigorously trained and certified in the most effective methods of structured literacy practices based on scientific research. Our hope is that all struggling readers become lifelong and joyous readers and writers.
